Opposition Leader Lim Kit Siang wants to meet the top brass of Malaysian Airlines (MAS) to clarify the alleged extravagance and gross wastage of funds in the airlines.

"I am very concerned about an email which I have received entitled 'MAS the flying buffet' making serious allegations against the national carrier," he told a press conference at Parliament lobby this afternoon.

Among the allegations, he revealed, were the RM841,000 renovation, RM1.6 million spent on acquisition of art-work post-renovation, RM10 million car deal for senior MAS executives, its food catering contract as well as MAS's consultancy services.

At taxpayers' expense

He said Malaysians are entitled to a proper accountability from the new MAS chief executive officer Idris Jala and chairperson Dr Munir Majid because it is a government-linked company.

"This means it is funded with taxpayers' money, and losses suffered by MAS are eventually at the taxpayers' expense," he said

Last week, MAS announced its second straight quarterly loss, blaming high fuel prices for the poor result.

It posted a net loss of RM368 million for the three months to September compared with a profit of RM132.7 million a year earlier.
