Three names submitted for post of KL mayor

Three names have been submitted to be considered for the Kuala Lumpur mayor’s position, said Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad.

He said the names have been submitted to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently for final decision.

“I hope to be able to confirm (the name) by the middle of the month.

“At the moment the current mayor (Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz) will stay on until the end of September,” he told reporters after an event organised by Kuala Lumpur City Hall today.

Yesterday, Khalid confirmed having received the resignation letter from Mohd Amin on Sept 1.

According to Khalid, he had yet to reply to the letter, which came with a 30-day notice, as he felt that the matter should be given due consideration and whether a suitable replacement had been identified.

Meanwhile, when asked to comment on a suggestion by Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar for the MACC to be vested with the power to prosecute, Khalid said the suggestion involved amendments to the relevant act.

“Of course, we (the government) agree that MACC should have the right to prosecute in the event Attorney-General decides not to prosecute.

“(At the moment) the system is that MACC investigate then they will present to the AG, so if the AG feels the case is not strong but the MACC feels it is strong, then MACC should be given the right to bring the case to the court,” he added.

Nurul Izzah made the suggestion via her Twitter post yesterday following the controversy of Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng’s acquittal yesterday.
