Prominent lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said he and his legal counsels contemplated to move his money laundering case from the Sessions Court to High Court for a fair trial.

"I think High Court judge would be better to hear this case. Give me an independent High Court judge or any (independent) judge, I can almost tell you we will win this case," he said in a press conference at KL Sessions Court today.

Earlier, he had earlier claimed trial to four charges under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001 for allegedly receiving two separate payments totalling RM9.5 million from Najib Razak between 2013 and 2014.

During the press conference, Shafee also alleged that the probe against him was incomplete and investigators were in a rush to charge him.

"Najib was asked to appear at the MACC headquarters at 10am today to give his statement about the RM9.5 million.

"He is the only other witness who can corroborate or deny my claims.

"But it was cancelled and I was brought to court today without the benefit of Najib's statement as it was canceled.

"MACC said no need, and that means the investigation is not complete. They don't bother to listen to Najib's statement. Why do you think they charged me today? They rushed to charge me," Shafee said.

Asked if he would recuse himself from leading the defence team for Najib's case, Shafee said the charges against him do not affect his position as the lawyer for Najib.

"I do not have to recuse myself. In fact, I heard rumours that they wanted to charge Najib and me together for the RM9.5 million charges so it becomes a joint trial.

"Malaysian rumours are normally true," he quipped.

"If they charged me jointly with Najib, I cannot be a counsel to defend him and myself. But that will not work because we have our own strategy if it ever comes to that," he added.
