Thai army steps up efforts to track down suspects in Pattani ambush

The Thai army is intensifying efforts to track down the suspects involved in an ambush in the Nongchik district last week that killed two army rangers and wounded four others.

The 10pm (local time) incident took place at Kampung Ban Tan in the Ban Khao sub-district where the army rangers were patrolling on motorcycles.

"Investigations revealed that the ambush was launched by a group led by Maulana Samoh," said military chief of the Pattani Task Force Maj Gen Jatuporn Kalampasut.

He said so far, the Thai army had arrested eight people who were believed to have links with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional group.

Jatuporn said about 1,000 army personnel had been deployed to several locations in Pattani and Songkhla provinces in their efforts to locate the suspects.

Meanwhile, Fourth Army Region commander, Lt Gen Piyawat Nakwanich, said instructions had been issued to all residents of Ban Khao and Thakamcham sub-districts in Pattani requiring them to report to the authorities.
