UMNO AGM | Umno must move beyond the "Hidup Melayu" (long live the Malays) slogan while reviving the party, says Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

Instead, he said Umno must carve out a plan to modernise the Malays.

"We must be able to say how we will guide the birth of 'Melayu Maju' (modern Malays) and not just (shout) 'Hidup Melayu'," Mohamad said at the opening of the Umno wings' annual assembly tonight.

This is part of the Umno 2030 blueprint which he wants the party to work on in order to restore Malay confidence in the Umno.

Earlier, Mohamad also called on the party to spark a "new Malay renaissance".

"Umno must work hard to convince the Malays, that Umno will focus all its energy for the next 10 years to become a movement that uplifts and enlightens the Malays," he said.

He added that Umno must also have a detailed stand on matters such as the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), education, economy, international affairs and commerce, and public policy.

The UEC is a certificate for independent Chinese schools that the Pakatan Harapan federal government has pledged to recognise.

Umno has opposed its recognition as it does not include Bahasa Malaysia and history in the exams.

The Umno Women, Youth, and Puteri wings will debate Mohamad's speech tomorrow.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will deliver his opening address tomorrow night, which will be debated on Sunday.
