Umno hopes to form 'unity government' with 'any' Harapan party

Hope: It will be a step backwards for any of the Pakatan Harapan coalition parties to form an alliance with Umno. It will betray the trust the rakyat have placed upon Harapan.

It is sad that instead of trying to correct their mistakes and move forward as a formidable opposition, Umno is opting for the easy way out, looking for a backdoor entry to the government.

Make no mistake, we still need a strong opposition to be the check and balance to our current government.

Unfortunately, after 60-plus years in power, Umno has no idea how to do it. They just can't see themselves as underdogs, which they are, needing to fight to gain the trust of the public again.

The previous comfort life of being treated like VIPs no matter where they went, had pampered them into forgetting that they are in a way, public servants. Similarly, with other BN component parties as well.

As long as they still don't realise they need to take an honest look at themselves in the mirror, the road back to power may not come until many years down the road.

It is time to re-learn how to "serve" the public again rather than looking for an easy way out. It may be difficult, but it is the right thing to do.

Léon Moch: The very fact that the Umno president wants this (to be part of the government) is proof that Umno has no respect whatsoever for the wishes of the people, let alone desires to reform for the better.

CKL: A “unity government”? What a bizarre idea.

This government is not disunited. It was elected by Malaysians in GE14. It can govern effectively and fulfil most of its promises in the manifesto.

In doing all this, Harapan does not need Umno or PAS. No, it does, but as an effective opposition to ensure Harapan keeps its promises, and do not become corrupt, racist and ineffectual as Umno was when they were in government.

Taking Umno in would unravel everything and put Malaysia back where it was on May 8, 2018.

Ememkay: The people made a collective decision that BN must be in the opposition. BN must realise that endemic corruption was the cause of their loss.

They must stay in the opposition bench and learn how to govern without corruption before trying to win future elections.

There are no shortcuts to return to power.

Ex-wfw: Notwithstanding that BN has found itself in an awkward situation to put it mildly, it has to unlearn all the bad habits it had taken into its system over the past 50 years.

I don't think any part of Harapan is ready to make a deal, no matter what the soothsayers may predict. The majority of the voters are certainly not ready for such a change.

Isn't this too hasty with 1MDB and the “whale” still flopping in the ocean?

Such desperate attitude surely indicates something not is right for an institution that had run this nation since independence.

The sad thing is you still have blind supporters who seem to think that all these happenings can be ignored; as if nothing untoward had happened!

Our universities may not measure up to the best in the international parade, but their graduates have begun to put on their thinking caps.

If you insist the voters change to meet your objectives, you must be dreaming.

Anonymous_d9ebfdab: Umno is desperate. This “unity government” is to give hope to its members that the next gravy train is around the corner.

Else by the end of this year, there will be very few MPs or members left.

Abdullah Karim: Indeed, is there even a need for Umno to form a unity government when many of its members (and many more to come) are registering in droves as Bersatu and Amanah members?

Anonymous: Zahid is just trying his best to keep his seat by fooling the Umno members - he knows it’s a matter of time before Khairy Jamaluddin unseats him.

Hearty Malaysian: The people fought so hard to get rid of the corrupt Umno regime over the last three general elections, supporting opposition parties at great costs and with much sacrifices.

It would be sheer betrayal of the people’s aspirations and trust if any Harapan party is willing to accept Umno wholesale as a power-sharing unity government.

Any move towards this direction by Harapan would spell doom to new Malaysia.

Andysee: With news that Umno wants to come back into government and that they are talking to Mahathir and Bersatu, who should we trust?

We need to be careful about what Mahathir and Bersatu will do. Will they betray Harapan and the people?

PCG: It is indeed sad and unfortunate that this will likely happen.

There are too many ex-Umno members currently in Harapan, and as can be seen in the recent PKR elections, many of them are power hungry.

Umno, with the decades of ill-gotten monies, can easily buy MPs and other parties, just to gain power.

Anonymous_1371726498: Umno did the cha-cha-cha with PAS to break up Pakatan Rakyat. Now Umno is doing cha-cha-cha with PKR to break up Pakatan Harapan.

We would prefer Mahathir to remain as PM until GE15. Anwar Ibrahim can take over after GE15.

Not Convinced: Didn’t Zahid said he met with Mahathir twice and Anwar nil since GE14?

So Umno is actually doing cha-cha-cha with Mahathir, whose Bersatu is a splinter party of Umno.
