Bersih: Najib mistaken, election offence police report by EC

It was the Election Commission, not Bersih, that lodged a police report against Najib Abdul Razak, the ex-premier was told today.

Bersih said it only lodged a complaint with the EC over Najib's alleged campaigning on voting day for the Sungai Kandis by-election, which contravenes election laws.

"The EC then lodged a police report over the same matter, which we believe led to the investigation of Najib," said the electoral watchdog.

Earlier today, Najib asked whether Bersih had singled him out by not lodging a similar report against PKR for alleged electoral offences during the by-election.

This followed police stating that they would be calling up Najib for questioning over a social media posting on polling day, allegedly urging Sungai Kandis voters to cast their ballots for BN.

It is an offence under Section 26(1)(a) and (f) of the Election Offences Act 1954 to campaign on polling day.

Bersih said in their report to the EC, they had listed down election offences committed by both Umno and PKR.

"It is essentially up to the EC to consider appropriate measures to take necessary action on election offences.

"Bersih welcomes the action taken by the EC and the police, as this sets a new precedent of taking action on election offences, an area which has been largely ignored with total impunity in the past under the rule of BN," it said.
