Deal with political funding properly, be fair to all - SWP chief

The issues pertaining to political funding should be dealt with properly to give fairness to all political parties wanting to participate in democracy in this country, said Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) president Munan Laja.

He said both the governing parties and the opposition must come down and sit together to find the solution on how to raise funds without resorting to activities that could lead to wrongful conduct and corruption.

“Timber concessions or provisional lease of land were given to big corporate companies in exchange for political funding. This is wrong and has been going on for so long.

“An opposition candidate would be very dissatisfied after losing an election just because he could not raise campaign fund as much as the parties who are in power,” he said in a statement sent via WhatsApp here today.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Friday said the government was still studying the best mechanisms on the funding of political parties in the country as the biggest corruption scandals were most related to such parties.

Munan said that SWP agreed that a fair new method in raising political funding was needed and that they would wait for the best decision from the government on the matter.

“A good government must have a good and fair solution or else democracy is will be for the rich only,” he added.
