In his capacity as territories minister, Khalid Samad has filed suit against Gerakan Muslimah Malaysia leader Wan Asshima Kamaruddin over her allegation that he approved an LGBT event. 

The suit was filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Sept 13. 

A Facebook posting from Wan Asshima in August alleged that Khalid had greenlit an LGBT event in Kuala Lumpur.

Khalid, the Amanah communications director, said that the posting not only meant that he approved of the festival and the LGBT community, but that he was also willing the abuse the rights of Muslims.

He added that it also meant that he does not respect Islamic laws as stated in the Quran and Sunnah, and that he abused his position as minister to raise the status of the LGBT community and safeguard their rights.

Khalid is seeking general, exemplary and aggravated damages and costs from the defendant.

The minister claimed that Wan Asshima had acted mala fide in uploading the defamatory and false posting to incite the hatred of Muslims against him, which tarnished his image and reputation, as well as generated public odium.

Khalid said that his lawyers had sent a letter of demand dated Aug 30 for the defendant to withdraw the post but she had not done so.

The matter came up for case management today before High Court deputy registrar Rumaizah Baharom, who fixed Oct 29 for further case management – as Khalid's lawyer Nadzratun Naim Hammad Azizi had yet to serve the suit to Wan Asshima after two attempts.

"We have tried a personal service and also by registered mail but have yet to achieve success," said Nadzratun.
