The family of hunger strike couple A Balakrishnan and M Rukumani Devi will lodge a report with the Bukit Aman disciplinary division chief on Monday.

The report, which is a compilation of alleged police misconduct directed at the couple, was meant to be made today at the police headquarters, but the division only operates on weekdays.

Instead, DAP NGO bureau chief Ronnie Liu who represented the family and Balakrishnan's brother A Thirumoorthy managed to secure a meeting with a police officer who identified himself as ASP Bashir.

During the 45-minute meeting, Liu claims that Bashir listened attentively to the family's grouses and officially received the documents supporting the family's complaints to the division.

According to Liu, Bashir promised the family that he would forward the information to the disciplinary division chief on Monday.

The couple have been on hunger strike since Nov 30. They are protesting Balakrishnan's banishment to Jeli in Kelantan under the Emergency Ordinance.

They have vowed to starve themselves until they see justice done. They feel that the authorities should free Balakrishnan or charged him in open court for his alleged crimes.

Police pressure

Among the issues that will be reported to the disciplinary division chief are (1) Balakrishnan's re-arrest under the same charges after he was released from Simpang Renggam detention order; (2) Police in Jeli seeking to get Balakrishnan warded at the psychiatric ward in Kota Bharu and (3) Police 'harassment' when Rukumani was brought to hospital.

Liu also disclosed that the family plans to submit a memorandum to Health Minister Dr Chua Soi Lek alleging that hospital authorities in Kota Bharu and Putrajaya were taking orders from the police.

In a related development, Rukumani, a mother of two, still refuses to budge from Putrajaya hospital even though doctors wanted to discharge her.

Rukumani, 35, brought her hunger strike to the doorsteps of the Internal Security Ministry in Putrajaya on Tuesday, but was brought to the Putrajaya hospital the following day.

She is holding the police responsible for her admission into hospital and wants them to bring her back to the ministry.

Meanwhile, Balakrishnan (right) continues his hunger strike at Kuala Balah in Jeli alone.

Liu urged the government to at least send a representative to listen to the couple's pleas, as he feels they are adamantly pursuing their hunger strike.

"If not, it's very likely that two lives will be lost," said Liu.
