Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman today announced that Malaysia has achieved its 15-gold medal target at the Asian Para Games 2018 in Indonesia.

"In conjunction with the National Sports Day celebrations, I am very pleased to announce that we have met our 15 (gold) medal target," Syed Saddiq said during the National Sports Day celebrations at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City this morning.

In congratulating the athletes, Syed Saddiq urged all Malaysians to take up a more active lifestyle.

"That is why we are all here today. To show that sports belong to all. We all have our favourite activities.

"Keep up the spirit, not just today, but go home and make plans to be more active," Syed Saddiq, who is also Muar MP, said to the 8,000 participants of the Fun Run and Fun Ride kick-off events from 38 activities scheduled today.

Syed Saddiq also credited the outstanding achievements of Malaysian Paralympic athletes Mohamad Ridzuan Puzi and Abdul Latif Romly who broke world records in their respective events at the games.

On Wednesday, Mohamad Ridzuan clocked 11.87 seconds in the men’s 100m T36 (cerebral palsy) to erase the old record of 11.90s set by Evgenii Shvetcov of Russia in 2013.

Abdul Latif, meanwhile, erased his own world record in men’s T20 (learning disability) when he jumped 7.64 metres.

His previous record of 7.60m was set at the Rio Paralympics 2016 in Brazil.

Last night, Bernama reported that 17-year-old Eddy Bernard had clinched Malaysia's 15th gold medal in the long jump T44 T62/64 category.

Eddy recorded a jump of 6.30m, a new para games record.

As of 7.30pm yesterday, Malaysia's medal haul stood at 15 gold, 24 silver and 21 bronze.

The Asian Para Games, which began on Oct 6, will end today.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is scheduled to flag off the Fun Run and Fun Ride activities today.

Other activities in the line-up included cycling, skateboarding, martial arts and e-sports.
