Former government spy chief Hasanah Abdul Hamid will be slapped with criminal breach of trust (CBT) charges tomorrow, said MACC.

In a statement, the anti-graft body said they have acquired the consent from the Attorney-General's Chambers to charge the former director-general of Prime Minister's Department's Research Division at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.

They said the charges against Hasanah were related to the misappropriation of government funds but did not specify how many charges she would face tomorrow.

It is believed that the charges are related to the alleged misappropriation of US$12 million (RM49.91 million at the current exchange rate) of government funds.

On Tuesday, Malaysiakini reported that Hasanah was to be brought to the courts at about 8am tomorrow and charged under Section 409 of the Penal Code.

Section 409 deals with criminal breach of trust by public servants or agents and is punishable by a maximum jail term of 20 years, whipping and a possible fine upon conviction.

Malaysiakini had previously reported that some intelligence officers attached to the division may have received the US$12 million from a foreign source via a Middle Eastern country ahead of the May 9 general election.

The officers had allegedly abused their authority to facilitate bringing the cash into Malaysia through an airport.

The “Research Division” of the Prime Minister's Department under the previous administration was alternatively known as the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO).
