The Saudi flip-flop on RM2.6b; Najib loses cool during interview

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

The Saudi flip-flop

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Ahmed Al-Jubeir has told his Malaysian counterpart that the RM2.6 billion in former premier Najib Abdul Razak's bank accounts did not originate from the Saudi Arabian government.

Najib's immediate response was to point to several bank documents he uploaded to Facebook on Sept 13 which showed that the money came from one "Prince Faisal bin Turkey bin Bandar Alsaud" and the Saudi government's Finance Ministry.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the fact that Adel has contradicted his own statements made in 2016 was "immaterial" because his administration knew that the funds originated from 1MDB.

Malaysiakini explains, in simple language, the 38 charges which prosecutors laid against Najib in the latest instalment of KiniGuide.

Najib loses cool during interview

Najib became angry on several occasions during an interview with Al Jazeera's Mary Ann Jolley, whom he had deported last year. Najib even called Jolley a "nuisance".

Najib later apologised. He said the interview took place while his family members were being questioned by the authorities and he was very concerned for them.

Najib told Al Jazeera that the oft-mentioned "pink diamond" was meant to be a gift from UAE prince Sheikh Mansour Zayed to his wife Rosmah Mansor, but she never received it.
