Police have detained seven people in connection with a ruckus during the PKR branch elections in Tanjung Karang on Sunday.

The Star quoted Kuala Selangor district police chief Mohd Asri Abd Wahab who said the suspects, aged between 19 and 49, were arrested later the same day.

“An altercation occurred at 3.30pm between two groups supporting two candidates.

“Both sides threatened one another. However, no weapons were used and no serious injuries were reported," Mohd Asri was quoted as saying.

He also said four police reports were lodged and the seven suspects later surrendered themselves.

“The arrests were made between 9pm and 10.30pm when the seven suspects surrendered themselves at the district police headquarters," Mohd Asri said yesterday.

All seven suspects are being investigated under the Pe­­nal Code for rioting and criminal intimidation.

In the third and final phase of voting in Selangor yesterday, tempers flared at several PKR divisions after a delayed start from its 10am schedule, including in Tanjong Karang.

Meanwhile, The Star also quoted Petaling Jaya district police chief Asst Comm Mohd Zani Che Din who said seven people arrested on Oct 21 for alle­gedly trying to cheat in the Petaling Jaya Utara PKR division elections, were released after posting bail.

Bukit Lanjan assemblyperson Elizabeth Wong, who won the PJU division chief post uncontested, at the time told Malaysiakini that a commotion was triggered over alleged phantom voters claim.
