Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo has shot down a suggestion that Najib Abdul Razak's trial in court be aired live on television.

The minister said today that national broadcast station RTM and news service Bernama have limited broadcasts and as such would not be able to air the trial of the former prime minister, who is facing a raft of criminal breach of trust and money laundering charges.

"This is the second time this question has been put to me. I have already stated that there will be no live telecast for his (Najib) trial. RTM has limited broadcast, as does Bernama.

"There are many other things which should be covered in the country, (and) as I have specified, the news will still cover segments of the trial," Gobind said during a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

Yesterday, the lead counsel in Najib's defence team, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said it would be a "good idea" for Najib's trial to be aired live on television for public consumption.

Shafee said this when answering a question on whether Najib's trial should be aired live for the public since the former prime minister had said the trial would be his platform to clear his name from alleged wrongdoings.

"I think everything should be transparent. Nothing to hide," Shafee had told reporters yesterday.

Najib has to date been slapped with 38 criminal charges relating to 1MDB, SRC International and 1MDB's settlement with Abu Dhabi wealth fund International Petroleum Investment Corporation (IPIC).
