(AFP) Seven seamen were injured when two unladen tankers collided in the busy Malacca Strait today, maritime authorities said.

"The injured seamen, including the captain of the Panama-registered Silversea, have been taken to hospital," said Nasar Abdul Hadi, a supervisor with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.

Nasar told AFP the Silversea and the Greek-flagged Paris II collided early Wednesday about 11.5 nautical miles from Port Klang's entry point.

"The collision did not cause any pollution," he said.

Nasar said there were no reports of injuries among the crew of the Paris II, which was continuing its journey to Singapore for repairs.

The Silversea "is stable and there is no fear of it sinking", he said.

Nasar said Paris II is an oil tanker while Silversea is a goods tanker.

Bernama news agency said two crewmen were treated on board the Silversea and seven were taken to hospital. The agency identified Silversea's injured captain as Romanian Marmeliuc Lucian Gabriel, 46.
