MACC urged to probe RM31m musical fountain in Sarawak

The MACC has been urged to investigate the RM31 million musical water fountain in front of the Sarawak state assembly building.

Assemblyperson (Pending-DAP) Violet Yong called the water fountain a ridiculous use of taxpayers’ money.

“It is a normal fountain and most of the parts were from China. Besides, it does not display any other special effects, unlike the one in Dubai that comes with flame effects or a fire show.

“So, don’t you think the project was overpriced?” she asked the state government led by Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), as reported by New Straits Times today.

She said this during the debate on the state’s 2019 Budget today.

Yong said she was also told that there had not been an open tender for the project to construct the water fountain, which was carried out under Kuching North City Hall (DBKU).

There was no project signboard put up during the construction stage either, she added.

Yong then accused the state government of being reluctant to reveal the company behind the project.

This is because, she said, Chief Minister Abang Johari Abang Openg had avoided responding to the issue when it was highlighted in the media.

She also criticised the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) for failing to carry out its duties in this case.
