Minister - Gov't mulling new mechanism to make ex-husbands pay alimony after divorce

The government plans to introduce a mechanism that can make ex-husbands pay their ex-wives for their alimonies as decided by Syariah Court after divorce.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa said the move was aimed at helping divorced women who were oppressed by their irresponsible ex-husbands who refused to pay for their alimonies.

He said the mechanism was to enable the Syariah Judiciary Department to claim from the men’s Employees Provident Fund or bank accounts to pay alimonies to their ex-wives upon a decision of the Syariah Court.

The minister said the department’s Family Support Division (BSK) would give the ex-husbands a grace period of six months after the court’s decision to pay to their ex-wives.

“Within the six months period, if the women did not receive the alimonies, legal action will be taken against the ex-husbands.

“I will meet with the BSK tomorrow to discuss the matter to ensure that it will be standardised in all states,” he told reporters after meeting with farmers in Tanjung Piandang near Parit Buntar today.
