Battle wounds still raw in PKR; fifth by-election coming?

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Battle wounds still raw

Although the PKR elections are over, there are still no signs that things will cool down anytime soon.

Deputy president candidate Rafizi Ramli has conceded defeat, somewhat grudgingly, because he didn't want to drag the party down.

Dr Afif Bahardin, who failed to win the PKR Youth chief race, tore up a Rafizi "cai dan" (candidates list) on stage to express his frustrations with how the election process was conducted.

Afif's supporters booed the new PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir when he was announced as the winner of the contest.

However, Afif said he will ask his supporters throughout the country to back Akmal as their new leader.

The top two positions in PKR Wanita wing were won by Azmin Ali's allies, while most other wing positions were won by Rafizi's allies.

Outgoing PKR Wanita head Zuraida Kamaruddin hoped that Malaysia will one day have a woman as prime minister.

Fifth by-election on the cards?

The Election Court has ruled in favour of Dr S Streram's petition to annul the Rantau election result for May 9.

The Election Commission cannot call a by-election yet because the court has withheld its order for 14 days pending a possible appeal to the Federal Court.

Polls watchdog Bersih has demanded that the authorities charge returning officer Amino Agus Suyub for breaching the Elections Offences Act.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, will defend the Rantau seat should there be a new election.

Zuraida said PKR Wanita will propose two local women as potential candidates for the Rantau by-election.

Rafizi said he will not be a candidate for the by-election but promised that he will join the campaign.
