Anwar to form special committee to review PKR election system

PKR AGM | Incoming PKR president Anwar Ibrahim intends to form a special committee to review the entire party electoral process which has been marred by allegations of rigging and money politics.

"My personal view has been very critical of the whole process from the beginning, but that is my personal view.

"I, of course, went along with the party (but) I think we have to relook at it.

"I am not personally too keen (on the system) but the party is a democratic party, which means we have to assign a team to review (the system) and make recommendations to the leadership whether to proceed with this process," he said during a press conference at the 13th PKR National Congress held at Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam today.

On the e-voting system, he said, the issue is that there are some members in the rural areas who are not computer-savvy, which has caused huge problems in the process.

Anwar, who is also the Port Dickson MP, pointed out that the party election system is very elaborate and sophisticated, which is why it is important for it to be conducted in a professional and competent manner.

On the party elections in Tawau and Julau, he said that he believes the elections should have been cancelled immediately once any irregularities were detected.

"But the (party) election commission decided to wait two days as we thought that postponing will affect the whole electoral process," he said.

Once there is a delay, a re-election would be unwise as it would create the perception that it is merely an attempt to change the process, he said.

"I appealed to the party leaders last Tuesday to suggest that we move on and accept the results.

"Fortunately, Rafizi (Ramli) said okay and conceded, but I can assure that there is no covering up.

"If there is a compelling case, we will investigate," Anwar said.

Rafizi, who had been running for deputy president against incumbent Azmin Ali, had conceded defeat in the race.

He said he did it for the greater good of the party, despite having reasons to appeal.
