Anwar seeks to heal PKR after gruelling polls; Mahathir weighs in on Icerd

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Anwar seeks to heal PKR after gruelling polls

PKR finally announced its new leadership line-up after a tumultuous nine-week party election process.

Outgoing PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, in her parting speech, urged party members to accept the results.

Newly minted PKR president Anwar Ibrahim urged the party to close ranks, telling winners not to attempt to purge losers.

However, the rivalry between PKR leaders Azmin Ali and Rafizi Ramli appeared set to continue.

Mahathir weighs in on Icerd

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said it was "almost impossible" to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd) without a constitutional amendment.

Mahathir also dismissed there would be riots if Icerd was ratified unless Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi "stirred trouble", noting that Zahid had threatened that the Malay community would run "amok" if the United Nations treaty is ratified.

Anwar criticised Umno and PAS for trying to play "Malay champions" over the Icerd issue but failed to speak up on the multi-billion ringgit 1MDB scandal.

Outgoing PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said Pakatan Harapan should not play to the opposition's tune of race and religion.

Loke spars with MIC

MIC vice-president C Sivarraajh accused Transport Minister Anthony Loke of taking "cheap shots" after the minister called out MIC president SA Vigneswaran for allegedly violating airport security protocol and defying security officials.

Loke said he did not need publicity and wanted to send a message to government officers that they should not fear VIPs when conducting their duty and that he was prepared to stand up for them if they did their job by the book.

Other Kinibites

Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy and state exco Zairil Khir Johari were defeated in the Penang DAP election.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his party will form a joint committee with PAS on Malay agenda.

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar warned Harapan not to be over-confident as there is no guarantee it can win in the next general election.

Wan Azizah urges PKR to gear up for the Sarawak election, which will take place in 2021 at the latest and the possibility of taking power there.

Anwar said PKR should not ignore Dr S Streram in deciding the candidate for the Rantau by-election.

Looking ahead

The Dewan Rakyat will resume sitting.

Wan Azizah will be attending a function at the Universiti Malaysia Medical Centre.
