T'ganu gov't to appoint woman state assembly member

The Terengganu government is set to make history in the state’s administration with the appointment of a woman as a member of the state legislative assembly in an effort to empower women in society.

State assembly speaker Yahya Ali said the name of the woman concerned, and also of another woman who will be appointed as a senator, will be announced at the coming state assembly sitting beginning on Nov 25.

He said a woman would be appointed as a member of the state assembly as all the current elected state representatives were men. The Terengganu constitution allows for an elected state assembly member with non-voting rights.

“The appointment of the woman senator and a woman state assembly member is an assurance by the PAS government to always improve the state government’s administration.

“Apart from that, we do not want women to be left out of the state’s administration,” he said at a meeting with media practitioners in Terengganu today.

At the meeting, Yahya also enlightened the press on several issues and motions to be brought up at the coming state assembly sitting such as on Malay reserved land and the state budget. - Bernama
