Icerd debate rages on; beer promoter's harasser loses job

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Icerd debate rages on

Things got heated up in the Dewan Rakyat as politicians from both sides of the floor pressured Foreign Affairs Minister Saifuddin Abdullah on the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).

The Pahang legislative assembly approved an emergency motion rejecting the proposed ratification of Icerd.

Inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun urged all quarters to obey the law, in voicing out their protests against the Icerd.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P Waythamoorthy, who has found himself at the centre of the Icerd debate, said he does not need any online campaigns calling for him to stay as minister, amid petitions calling for his ouster.

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak acknowledged that the previous BN government under him had twice studied the possibility of ratifying Icerd, but decided against it as Icerd was incompatible with Malaysia's social contract.

Meanwhile, a new coalition known as Gagasan Kuasa Tiga (G3) has vowed to "destroy" DAP over their alleged plans to attack the constitutional position of Malays, Muslims and the Malay rulers.

Beer promoter's harasser loses job

'Edi Rejang', the man who recorded his tirade against a woman promoting beer at a hypermarket, has been fired from his job as a despatch rider.

Earlier yesterday, Edi, whose real name is Mohamad Edi Mohamad Riyars, apologised for his action, saying he regretted his action following the widespread backlash against his stunt.

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said DAP will be fielding its legal team to assist Mohamad Edi when he is interviewed by the police, following police reports lodged against him.

Carlsberg, the brewer of the beer the promoter was handling, said all its testing activities are strictly meant for non-Muslims of legal age.

Other Kinibites

Education Minister Maszlee Malik urged hotels to allow students to use their swimming pools, as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

Communications Minister Gobind Singh Deo asked TM and other telecommunication providers to buck up in providing service to their customers, instead of blaming others for the drop in their share prices.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Hanipa Maidin said Putrajaya will amend, not repeal, the controversial National Security Council (NSC) Act 2016, despite an electoral campaign promise to abolish this law.

Police arrested four Finnish nationals at a hotel in Langkawi on Tuesday for distributing books containing excerpts from the Bible, in public places.

Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin said that he hopes PAS will urge its followers to back BN candidate Mohamad Hasan if a by-election for the Rantau state seat is called.

Looking ahead

Lim Lip Eng will accompany the man who bullied the beer promoter, who has to give his statement to the police at IPD Ampang Jaya, Jalan Dagang Besar, Ampang, Selangor.

Mahathir will launch the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show (Maha) 2018 at Hall D, Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) in Serdang.
