Mohamad Hasan yet to decide on Rantau seat appeal

Having pledged to defend the Rantau state seat in a by-election, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan is undecided on whether to file an appeal against the Seremban Election Court's decision that nullified his victory in the 14th general election.
When contacted, the former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar told Malaysiakini he was still deliberating and has yet to make a decision.
"Not yet. I am still weighing the good and bad of whether I should file an appeal or otherwise," he told Malaysiakini.
The Election Commission (EC) must wait 14 days from last Friday before it can act on the court ruling invalidating the Rantau election, according to its chief Azhar Harun.
Azhar said this was because the court has withheld for 14 days the certificate ordering a re-election, presumably to give a chance to the parties to appeal the decision.
Mohamad retained the seat unopposed on May 9 after the election returning officers prevented PKR's Dr S Streram from entering the nomination centre to file his nomination paper.
Streram had been denied entry on the grounds he did not have an EC pass with him.
However, judge Azimah Omar ruled that there was no written law or requirement for a candidate and his seconder or proposer to have a pass to enter the nomination centre.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has since said that Mohamad would be fielded again to defend Rantau, while Harapan has yet to decide on its candidate.
