Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham has clarified that he has declared assets amounting to RM82 million, and not RM75 million, as contained in the MACC’s asset declaration website.

Astro Awani reported the DAP lawmaker saying that RM80 million of the amount was declared in his name and the remaining RM2 million in the names of his wife and children.

“I am thankful because God has been very good to me,” Ngeh told a press conference at the state Legislative Assembly building in Ipoh today. Ngeh is also the Perak state assembly speaker.

According to him, his net worth is expected to increase by several more millions, as there are several assets yet to be assessed, including insurance policies and his legal firm, which has been handed to his business partner.

Ngeh insisted that his wealth is “clean”, as he has never been involved in corruption in his 32 years as a lawyer.

According to the MACC website, Ngeh tops the list of Pakatan Harapan lawmakers who have declared their assets to date, with assets worth RM75,816,184.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad comes second with RM32.35 million worth of assets.

Ngeh said the mistake could have stemmed during the final summing-up by the MACC.

'I am free of corruption'

During the press conference, Ngeh reportedly kept insisting that he is free of corruption to the extent of having once failed to get motorcycle and car driving licences, as he did not want to pay for under table money to pass the tests.

He said he started accumulating his wealth after investing his first RM2 million, 20 years ago.

“There’s nothing to boast about, I still get my RM6 haircut at the Indian barber near my office, and if I have the time, I will go for an RM15 haircut at a saloon.”

Meanwhile, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh (photo) also took to Twitter to voice her dissatisfaction with the way the declaration document is presented.

“MACC asset declaration page really needs to be improved. Disclosure of assets without stating our liabilities, no details of assets, some updated and some not - just do not make sense. We have submitted all that details to MACC,” Yeoh tweeted.

At present, 25 ministers and deputy ministers, as well as 13 Harapan lawmakers, have yet to declare their assets.

They include Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, Ministers in the Prime Minister's Department Liew Vui Keong and P Waythamoorthy, Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah as well as Tourism, Art and Culture Minister Mohamaddin Ketapi.

The website also does not contain details on the assets of Mahathir's son, Mukhriz, who is also Kedah menteri besar.

However, the website has listed the monthly income of the abovementioned leaders.

Those who have yet to declare their incomes or assets are Deputy Federal Territories Minister Shaharuddin Md Salleh, Warisan president Shafie Apdal and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

The asset declaration was initially supposed to have been published on Oct 1 but it was later postponed to Oct 15, and again to Nov 1.
