S'gor MB convenes security council meet over riots

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari will convene a meeting of the state National Security Council chapter over the riots near the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya.

"We have to install safety and order. That is my first priority. That is why I called for the NSC (to meet)," he told reporters when met outside a private hospital in Subang Jaya.

The NSC has chapters in all states.

Earlier, Amirudin said the meeting this afternoon would present the "real situation" behind the riots.

"We want to know who is involved and how many. I believe we need to take immediate action to restore order," he added.

Amirudin had visited Fire and Rescue Department personnel Muhammad Adib Muhammad Kasim (photo), 24, who is in the intensive care unit after being attacked near the temple early this morning.

He also announced that the state government would take care of Adib's medical bills.

On whether the state government would intervene in the dispute over the relocation of the temple, Amirudin said this should be discussed later, because the priority now is to restore order.

The menteri besar said he was saddened by the riots, which saw thousands gather near the temple last night in response to an altercation the night before.

What started out as a peaceful gathering turned unruly after midnight. 

Several vehicles were damaged and the office of the firm which owned the land was attacked.

Apart from Adib, there are unconfirmed reports that others also sustained injuried.

So far, the police have arrested two individuals in connection with the riot.
