There also appears to be an attempt to set at least one vehicle outside the office ablaze, but the fire in the cabin did not spread, and an attempt to shove a small firecracker down the fuel inlet failed.
The 2.30am incident occurred as thousands had earlier gathered near the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ 25, Subang Jaya to purportedly “defend” it from a further incident, despite police warnings for them to disperse.
Although it was mostly peaceful at first, there were incidents of harassment targeting passing motorists at a makeshift roadblock near the temple.
The situation escalated at about 1am when two car wreckages from a fracas less than a day earlier were relit, as well as a factory near the temple.
A fire truck responding to the blaze was attacked by the crowd with projectiles and blunt objects, while others harassed journalists and told them to stop recording the incident.
The crowd had dwindled to about 1,000 people by about 1.30am, but a group started to walk towards MCT’s office to attack the place.
The police, which included at least one Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) troop at the scene, did not appear to intervene.
MCT’s subsidiary One City Development Sdn Bhd owns the land that the temple sits on. It was previously accused of orchestrating the fracas on Monday morning but denied involvement.
Last night, Bernama quoted inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun urging the crowd to disperse and not create any provocation.
He said preliminary information obtained by the police showed there were certain quarters trying to cause tension.
"I insist once again to those who have gathered there not to worsen the situation as the case is still being investigated by the police.
"In addition, we have also got information that they intend to gather at the Subang Jaya district police headquarters to cause a provocation. Stern action will be taken against those involved," he reportedly said at a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters in Shah Alam on Monday night.
