NGOs to rally against Waytha; Anwar held talks before choosing state chief, says sec-gen

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

NGOs to rally against Waytha

NGO Gerakan Pembela Ummah said about 30 NGOs will give a memorandum to the Prime Minister's Office after Friday prayers today, calling for the sacking of P Waythamoorthy as a minister.

As calls mount for Waythamoorthy to be sacked, Hindraf, of which he is the chairperson, claimed that he is being made a scapegoat following the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim in the Seafield Hindu temple riot incident.

Seven NGOs have lodged police reports urging the authorities to take immediate action against the perpetrators responsible for the death of Adib, who was allegedly beaten up by rioters outside the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in USJ25 in Subang Jaya, on Nov 27.

Terengganu Amanah Youth has suggested that Waythamoorthy be replaced with former PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar as a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of unity and social well-being.

Former Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin sarcastically tweeted that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad should not drop Waythamoorthy and Education Minister Maszlee Malik from his cabinet as the duo are "assets" for the opposition, in a sense that both regularly court controversies.

Anwar held talks before choosing state chief, says sec-gen

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim held discussions with divisional leaders for about a month before he appointed the state chiefs, said PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

PKR grassroots leaders lodged a disciplinary complaint against party member Latheefa Koya after she accused Anwar of practising cronyism and nepotism in appointing state party chiefs.

In reply, Latheefa, who is a lawyer by profession, said trying to silence her with such 'Umno-style' tactics will not succeed.

Several PKR leaders have also denied claims in a message making its rounds on social media that party deputy president Azmin Ali and 20 MPs from the party are set to join Bersatu. Both parties are components of Pakatan Harapan.

Meanwhile, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said that the party's leaders, both inside and outside the government, will not hesitate to leave Harapan if the 'new Malaysia' objective is abandoned by the coalition.
