Pressure mounts on Waytha; Anwar warns of 'deceptive' PKR leaders

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Pressure mounts on Waytha

Several groups gathered near the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya to demand the resignation of unity minister P Waythamoorthy over the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

One group, Kelab LLLM, said Waythamoorthy's resignation would help soothe those who feel aggrieved by the minister's handling of the riots near the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman, which led to Adib's death.

A similar sentiment was shared by Rural Development Minister Rina Harun in an interview with Malaysiakini.

A Kadir Jasin, the media advisor to the prime minister, said Waythamoorthy should relinquish his position and not be a burden on the government.

Meanwhile, DAP Youth secretary Teh Hoong Keat urged the public not to turn Waythamoorthy into a scapegoat over Adib's death.

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin assured the public that the postmortem report on Adib's death would be revealed in a few days.

Anwar warns of 'deceptive' PKR leaders

Nurul Izzah Anwar's resignation as PKR vice-president was an indictment of "greedy" and "deceptive" party leaders who are not interested in party unity, said party president Anwar Ibrahim.

Johor PKR leader Liew Chin Tong said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar had a "difficult" relationship. However, he believed both will find common ground for the sake of Malaysia.

PKR vice-president Tian Chua said swapping Malaysia's first-past-the-post electoral system for a proportional one will lead to more extreme voices in society.
