In light of various groups demanding that P Waythamoorthy resign as the unity minister, an apology by him may help to ease tensions, Rural Development Minister Rina Harun said.
However, she added that the decision about his position should made by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"He (Waytha) has to heed the voices of the people. Maybe, something can be done. I'm not sure if he should apologise for what has happened.
"It may help to ease the tension on the ground. But … as (for his position as) a minister, it is the prerogative of the prime minister," she said during a press interview held at the Bersatu headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.
Rina was asked by the press about the calls by various groups demanding for Waythamoorthy's resignation.
The demands were made on the grounds that Waythamoorthy had allegedly failed to ease racial tensions related to the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple riots in Subang Jaya.
He blaming the police officers and failing to apologise for an old video alleging discrimination against the Indian community were also cited as reasons for their demands.
"We have read many opinions from the people and netizens about this case. It has not helped to ease the situation.
"About Waythamoorthy, I have to leave it to the prime minister," she said.
On December 19, Bersatu Youth handed a memorandum to Mahathir, urging for the removal of Waythamoorthy as a minister.
