Police deny handling Azwanddin roughly at court

Police have denied allegations that they handled Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) president Azwanddin Hamzah roughly when he was brought to court for his remand hearing this morning.

"Checks found that when alighting from the police vehicle, he almost fell down as he snagged his foot and hit a flower pot while waving to his supporters. This was because other detainees on the chain were walking fast.

"Policemen on duty acted to help him get up," South Klang police chief Shamsul Amar Ramli said in a statement.

He added that Azwanddin's lawyer had also remarked that police gave their good cooperation.

Shamsul advised the public not to twist the incident and spread misinformation.

Azwanddin was subsequently remanded for four days today.

He was arrested by police yesterday after he threatened to attack a police station if the authorities did not arrest the perpetrators of last month's Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple riots.

At the same rally in Klang two days ago, Azwanddin also allegedly insulted Minister in the Prime Minister's department P Waythamoorthy by calling him with the P-word which is deemed sensitive to the Indian community.

Azwanddin is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code which deals with criminal intimidation as well as Section 504 for insulting a person.
