Anwar tells gov't to focus on important issues in the new year

In his new year message, Anwar Ibrahim has urged Putrajaya to focus on the important issues affecting the nation.

This, the PKR president said, was because those who voted Pakatan Harapan into power last May are now keeping close watch on its achievements.

Pointing out that the smooth transition of power from six decades of BN rule was a sign of a mature electorate, Anwar reminded his fellow lawmakers not to be too easily satisfied with their current status.

"We should not be easily satisfied, and in fact, we should be wary of 'invisible hands' out to sabotage the reform agenda desired by the people.

"The government must continue to listen to the people's plight.

"If we truly listen and observe, we will find many concerns and a lot of dissatisfaction on the ground," he said.

Among others, Anwar cited a personal survey he conducted among 3,000 students at a talk show session, where concerns about stagnant wages and unemployment predominated.

This, he said, compounded the problems faced by fishermen, rubber tappers and labourers, who often struggle to make ends meet.

"It must be stressed that Malaysia is a nation rich in natural resources and assets, and that is an indisputable fact.

"But our most important asset is the people, a pluralistic community that will continue to support each other, that have gone through numerous obstacles together, and will remain together to face future challenges," his message read.
