1MDB trial: Court to hear Najib's bid to recuse Sri Ram next month

The High Court in Kuala Lumpur has fixed Feb 8 to hear the application of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to recuse Gopal Sri Ram from being the senior public prosecutor in his 1MDB trial.
Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah wanted Najib's application to recuse Sri Ram to be heard before the main trial commences on Feb 12.
He also set Jan 31 for case management.
In August 2018, attorney-general Tommy Thomas appointed the former Federal Court judge as senior public prosecutor to spearhead the process of preparing charges for 1MDB-linked cases.
Senior lawyer Sulaiman Abdullah was also been appointed as lead prosecutor in the government's case against Najib. The former premier previously failed to recuse Sulaiman in the SRC International case.
On Sept 21, 2018, Najib was slapped with 25 charges, all linked to 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion donation scandal. The trial begins in April.
Twenty-one of the charges are related to money laundering and were brought by the police under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATF).
The remaining four charges were brought by the MACC for abuse of power.
Najib appeared in court today with his wife Rosmah Mansor and son Norashman.
DPP Ahmad Akram Gharib was also present, while Sri Ram himself was absent.
Bid to transfer Rosmah cases postponed
Also today the court postponed the hearing on the prosecution’s application to transfer two of Rosmah's corruption cases from the Sessions Court.
This came after Rosmah's lawyer Akberdin Abdul Kader said the defence needed time to study the documents related to Rosmah's corruption charges, which they had received this morning.
On Nov 15, 2018, Rosmah was accused of soliciting RM187.5 million from a company in exchange for her assistance for it to secure an RM1.25 billion solar contract in Sarawak.
Last month, the prosecution told the court it wanted a joint trial for Rosmah's 17 money laundering charges and the two graft charges.
