CAMERON POLLS | Pakatan Harapan has explained that the 'cash handout' images that surfaced on social media only depict party volunteers in Cameron Highlands being reimbursed.

Arvind Bharet, the assistant to the Jelai Harapan operations chief, also explained that the reimbursement will be declared as part of the coalition's campaign spending.

“I want to stress that was reimbursement money for the petrol costs for Harapan volunteers who came to Tanah Rata on their own motorbikes from their houses in the interiors on nomination day.

“These reimbursements will be declared as part of our campaign spending,” he said in a statement today.

The statement was later confirmed as official by Harapan's Cameron Highlands by-election campaign manager Wong Kah Woh.

Arvind stressed that the reimbursement was made according to the law.

“DAP, as a Harapan component party, believes in clean and transparent elections, and we will continue to hold to this principle in our campaign," he said.

'We will investigate'

Earlier, Harapan candidate M Manogaran told a press conference in Pos Menson that he would investigate the matter.

“I was not there, and I just came to know about it this morning. We will investigate,” he said.

Manogaran also stressed that he did not arrange for the reimbursement, and knows nothing about it.

Photographs depicting a woman in a red Cameron Highlands Harapan T-shirt handing out money went viral on social media today, prompting opposition leaders to mock the ruling coalition.

Among them was incumbent Cameron Highlands MP C Sivarraajh, whose 14th general election win was voided after the Election Court established vote-buying had occurred.

The MIC vice-president chided the alleged double standards displayed.

“This doesn’t matter because they are the federal government.

“If we even hold a kenduri (banquet) for our machinery, it will be a big offence and we won’t be able to vote for five years,” he said.

The Election Commission has barred Sivarraajh from both voting and contesting in elections for five years.

MIC Youth has also lodged a police report against Manogaran at the Tanah Rata police station today.
