Segamat MP cries foul over 'Ah Long' poster

Segamat MP R Santhara Kumar has cried foul over an online poster declaring that constituents should not seek help from him as he is not an ah long (loan shark).

Santhara, who blamed Segamat Umno for the poster, said this was based on a statement he issued on Jan 1 where he explained his parliamentary office did not provide interest-free loan as there was no such allocation.

The poster reproduced the statement along with the caption: "The people should not ask help from me as I am not an Ah Long".

"Certain irresponsible parties have circulated my mobile number asking people to look for me for personal and business loans, after which the Ops Johor Facebook posted the following statement allegedly coming from me: “Rakyat jangan mintak tolong dengan saya. Saya bukan Ah Long?”.

"The fake statement using an infographic has also been circulated widely on Whatsapp, showing there was clearly the ill-intention to defame me," he said in a statement today.

Santhara said he had merely explained that business loans can be obtained from Tabung Ekonomi Kumpulan Usaha Niaga (Tekun).

"As long as the application meets all the criteria, I said I would be happy to support the application.

"However, there are no allocations given to any MP by the government for any personal or business loans, whether free-interest or with interest," he said.

Santhara said he had also explained that it was unethical for him to certify any documents as true copies without sighting the original document and directed such request to the 11 village chiefs in Johor.

Santhara said his press secretary had since lodged a police report over the poster.

He also warned of legal action if such allegation is repeated.
