Bank Negara Governor Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz was conferred the Doctors of Laws honororis causa by the Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, Professor Fujia Yang, at the Malaysia Campus today.

In presenting the honorary degree, Bernama quoted Nottingham's Head of School of Economics, Professor Chris Milner as saying that the stability of the ringgit was restored under Dr Zeti's stewardship, with major reforms of Malaysia's financial system and strengthening of its financial markets.

Rapid development

"The economics profession still has too few highly qualified women," he said in his capacity as the Public Orator at the university's fifth graduation ceremony.

"Malaysia has witnessed the rapid development of new financial institutions and instruments, and an improvement in the means by which countries in the region co-operate on financial matters.

"Among these developments, I am sure that Dr Zeti would make particular note of her role in promoting the development of Islamic finance and banking," he added.

Dr Zeti the first woman governor of the central bank in 2000.
