Speaking to Malaysiakini, Umno veterans club secretary-general Mustapha Yaakub said that it appeared that only Umno, MIC and PAS were campaigning in earnest for BN.
"During the four days we were there, we didn't see (top) MCA vote canvassers. Only local MCA figures.
"Perhaps they will come at the last minute," he said.
MCA had decided during its annual conference in December that BN, a coalition the party had helped establish, be dissolved.
The party also opposed cooperation between BN coalition member Umno and PAS.
However, despite the strained ties between MCA and Umno, MCA top guns were present during the nomination process for the Cameron Highlands by-election last Saturday.
Mustapha said a victory in Cameron Highlands was crucial for BN because it would give the coalition a much-needed boost.
He said BN had a good chance of winning because voters were upset with Pakatan Harapan for failing to keep its election promises.
"Winning this by-election will ensure BN's continued relevance and help fix our problems," he said.
Similarly, Selangor Umno leader Rizam Ismail told Malaysiakini that a BN victory would help motivate the coalition to win in the upcoming Semenyih by-election slated for March 2.
"Voters need to send the signal that they don't want to be deceived (by Harapan).
"It is important to win in Semenyih to ensure more opposition lawmakers in Selangor," he said.
