SEMENYIH POLLS | Umno vice president Ismail Sabri refuted Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's claim that PAS will not support Umno in the Semenyih by-election.
He described Mahathir's claim as "very desperate".
"How can he (Mahathir) speak on behalf of PAS? (This) is a very desperate statement. Today, the BN candidate was accompanied by both BN and PAS supporters.
"Many senior PAS leaders were also present (to offer support)," he told Malaysiakini.
He said the leaders included secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, Sallehen Mukhyi (Selangor PAS chief), as well as vice presidents Idris Ahmad and Iskandar Abdul Samad.
"PAS and BN supporters went all-out for the candidate during the march to the nomination centre.
"The number (of PAS representatives who turned up) didn't gel with Mahathir's statement," Ismail said.
The BN candidate is Zakaria Hanafi.
Earlier today, Mahathir said PAS' decision (not to support Umno), which was communicated to him by its president Abdul Hadi Awang during their meeting yesterday, also came with a written agreement.
Hadi had reportedly said that "they will look into that" when asked whether the party would back BN's campaign in Semenyih.
Malaysiakini is attempting to contact PAS for comment.
