Malaysia has no plans to boycott Danish products on account of cartoons in a Danish daily that satirised Prophet Muhammad and which has led to world-wide protests, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.

Whatever action taken to protest against the cartoons in this country should not bring problems to other people, the prime minister said in a Bernama report today.

Protesting Muslims in different parts of the world have led to at least three reported deaths in Afghanistan and Somalia. Elsewhere, diplomatic relations have been strained as governments recalled their ambassadors over the incident.

On the local front, Abdullah described as "irresponsible" the action of the Sarawak Tribune newspaper in reprinting the offending cartoons.

Meeting to decide

Any action against the daily, however, would depend on results of the daily's senior management in its meeting with the Internal Security Ministry today, said Abdullah.

"I am surprised... they didn't think things through. In a way, they have been irresponsible as they know this kind of action can lead to ill-feelings," said Abdullah who also heads the ministry.

The Sarawak Tribune had on Saturday reprinted one of the offending cartoons. In a joint statement by its editorial committee, the daily later apologised and said the reprint resulted from an "oversight" on the part of the editor-on-duty.

The editor has since resigned, but that has not prevented the ministry from summoning the daily's management to its office for the meeting.
