MCA has set up a shadow cabinet of sorts to monitor the Pakatan Harapan government.
At the party’s 70th anniversary celebration in Kuala Lumpur today, president Wee Ka Siong announced the formation of nine new “government monitoring committees”.
The nine committees will each monitor national affairs and defence; economic development; basic infrastructure and development; local government, urban and rural development; education and human capital development; health and environment; telecommunication and multimedia; women, family and community development; and inter-ethnic harmony and youth and sports.
“This is MCA’s shadow cabinet as an opposition party.
“[...] We are to monitor the administration of each of ministry and their performance. Our principle is to rationally discuss politics and to question with professionalism.
“We believe this is a basic requirement of being a responsible opposition party,” Wee said during his speech.
Most of these nine committees will be led by young leaders who are articulate and have a “fresh image”, and be further filled by both female and male members from all age groups, he added.
However, the Ayer Hitam MP did not reveal the names of those leading these committees.
Youth speakers’ corner
Earlier, party secretary-general Chew Mei Fun unveiled a new youth-centred public speaking initiative named “Vocal”.
“We will recruit more young talents and expand our platform to all states and divisions, with the aim to nurture more young talents to have a political sense.
“At the same time, with the promotion of multi-lingual usage within the party, we are also encouraging our members to venture outside and establish more frequent inter-ethnic contacts and co-operations, in our march towards a party serving all races in its truest sense,” she said in her address.
To launch the initiative, six MCA youth members took the stage and delivered short speeches in either Mandarin, English and Bahasa Malaysia.
