"We understand that certain jobs have language requirements. That is unavoidable," said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P Waythamoorthy.
"Some companies say they need someone who can speak Mandarin as their clients communicate in Mandarin. But we should not have restrictions against any race," he told a national unity event in Kuala Lumpur today.
Waythamoorthy was responding to research by the Centre for Governance and Political Studies (Cent-GPS) that found discrimination against Indians and Malays in private sector hiring.
The research also found that women who wear the headscarf may find it harder to secure an interview.
However, DAP's research team has disputed the methodology of the research.
On March 10, Waythamoorthy said the government was studying the implementation of an action plan to curb racial discrimination in hiring.
