"Let's restructure MAS and give it to Fernandes," he told reporters in the Parliament lobby today.
"Let's not get involved in MAS' affairs. We shall see if Fernandes can bring in profits for MAS or otherwise.
"This is not nuclear science. You compare AirAsia with MAS. AirAsia is still new, compared to MAS, but the budget airline has managed to turn a profit. So let Fernandes manage MAS."
Rayer (below) clarified, however, that his proposal does not amount to a merger between the two airlines.
"I'm not sure about a merger, as I'm not sure whether AirAsia would be interested in taking over MAS' losses. So that's a different issue.
"What I'm saying is, it would be a good idea to let Fernandes take over MAS' operations and fire and hire whoever he wants (to help him run the company)."
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed yesterday that several offers to buy MAS have been received, but stressed the government had yet to decide whether to sell the ailing national carrier.
Earlier today, Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali said Putrajaya does not have the capacity to bail out MAS.
MAS reportedly suffered heavy losses after its privatisation in 2014.
Despite an RM6 billion infusion from Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the airline still failed to turn a profit.
