Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said today the US$126 million (RM514.2 million) offer was the "best price" Putrajaya could get for the Equanimity – the superyacht allegedly purchased by Low Taek Jho using misappropriated 1MDB funds.

"This is the best price. I mean, you can never be happy with the price (as) you always want more. It's natural.

"But if this is the best price we can have based on an open tender, I think we have to accept this is the best price we are going to get," he told journalists at the Parliament lobby today.

Lim pointed out that the sale came about despite a report by a local media claiming that the superyacht could not be sold for more than RM100 million.

Earlier today, the Attorney-General's Chambers confirmed that Genting Group would be purchasing the superyacht for US$126 million.

The government had previously set a reserve price of US$130 million.

Low is said to have spent US$250 million to acquire the superyacht, allegedly using funds diverted from 1MDB.

Lim said he was not clear as to who were all the bidders, but stated that Genting's offer was the highest.

The minister welcomed the sale, as the government had spent around US$3.5 million (RM14.3 million) in the last eight months to maintain the vessel docked in Langkawi.

"That is a very big amount. If we can sell it quickly and get the best price possible, at least we don't have to bear the sum.

"It's almost RM2 million a month, so it is very taxing," he said.
