Putrajaya tables new bill to impose departure levy

PARLIAMENT | Putrajaya has tabled a new bill to collect a departure levy from any person who leaves the country.

Tabled by Deputy Finance Minister Amiruddin Hamzah today, the Departure Levy Bill 2019 is scheduled for a second reading at the current Dewan Rakyat sitting, which will end by April 11.

"The proposed act provides for the implementation of departure levy on any person leaving Malaysia," read the bill.

It stated that the finance minister has the jurisdiction to fix the levy rate.

It was reported that the government had proposed to impose a levy of RM20 for travellers to Asean countries and RM40 to non-Asean countries.

Anyone who tries to avoid or help others to avoid the departure levy can be fined up to RM1 million or imprisoned for a maximum term of five years or both.

This included by means of giving false statement, entries or answers, or by fraud, artifice or contrivance.

The bill also stated that an individual found guilty of not providing reasonable assistance to the Customs officers to carry out their duties can be imprisoned between six months and three years or imposed a maximum fine of RM500,000.
