RANTAU POLLS | Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali questioned why Umno Youth did not seek a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on Tabung Haji when Umno and BN were in power.
"I am confused why they didn't suggest an RCI be formed when they were in power.
"Bank Negara had spoken out against the Tabung Haji management over financial misappropriation before. Why didn't Umno Youth speak up then and demand an RCI?
"Why is it that when Pakatan Harapan takes a bold step to speak truthfully to the depositors, Umno Youth pops up as champions of this issue?" Azmin asked when speaking to reporters in Rantau last night. Polling day takes place on April 13.
Yesterday, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki called for an RCI to probe allegations that Tabung Haji under BN had used depositors' funds to pay dividends.
He also wanted a probe into the claim that Tabung Haji had RM10 billion in losses on the books.
Previously, PAS and Umno top leaders had also called for a similar RCI in December after the Harapan government first reveaedl the results of an independent audit on Tabung Haji, which found that its past management had cooked the fund's books, while also paying dividends using depositors' savings.
These reasons, plus the RM10 billion of book losses, were cited by the government as to why Tabung Haji made a dividend payout of 1.25 percent, its lowest ever.
Azmin said the government had taken the approach of being open and transparent in order to safeguard the interests of depositors.
