Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad (above) is open to meeting any party, including Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun, regarding the establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

"I meet people every day. There are thosewho support it (IPCMC), and those who oppose it.

"We will constantly receive feedback from people and then take a decision," he told a press conference after launching the e-Dagang Commodities Global Trade Sdn Bhd platform in Putrajaya today.

The premier was responding to a question on whether the IPCMC will proceed despite police objection.

This after Fuzi earlier today, said that both serving and retired police personnel do not want the IPCMC to oversee police disciplinary cases.

A letter detailing the objections has been sent to the Prime Minister's Office, and those against the commission are looking to meet Mahathir personnaly to present their objections, Fuzi was quoted saying by Malay daily Berita Harian.

According to Fuzi (above), who is set to retire on Saturday, although the police had initially agreed to the implementation of the IPCMC, the decision to oppose was taken after a lot of opposition arose of late.

Harapan, under Item 20 of its election manifesto, had promised to implement the IPCMC within its first term.

Following the formation of the new government, Fuzi said last August that the police accepted the possible formation of the IPCMC, as long as its rights are protected.

His number two at the time, Noor Rashid Ibrahim, also heralded such a move, saying it would enhance the integrity and capabilities of the police.

Fuzi, however, later said that a police representative should be a part of the commission.

He said it was an “important condition” for the Royal Malaysian Police, despite noting the fact the IPCMC was to be an independent monitoring body.

Former IGP Mohammed Hanif Omar, meanwhile, said police should be given an avenue to appeal any of the commission’s findings of wrongdoing.

In September, last year, Mahathir announced that the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) would be strengthened and converted into the IPCMC.

The decision was reportedly made after it was learned that the bulk of public complaints lodged with the EAIC concerned police misconduct.
