INTERVIEW | Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng supports the idea of decentralising the government, but said there aren't enough funds to pull this off at present.
"(For example) schools. The locals know what is the condition of these schools, the quality of education," Lim said in a joint interview at Putrajaya recently.
"So, shouldn't they be able to give input? Instead of everything being decided by an office one thousand miles away, where they may have not gone down to see what is the actual situation.
"I believe there should be decentralisation. But not now, because we don't have the funds and resources to do so."
The finance minister stressed that decentralisation can only be carried out when there is enough revenue, and that it is more important to improve the country's economy and fiscal position first.
Decentralisation is a concept where authority and functions are disbursed to smaller areas, such as to a state, instead of being focused in Putrajaya.
Proponents of decentralisation argue that, among others, it empowers local communities more to decide on policy matters directly affecting them.
