A Johor state executive council (exco) member has claimed he is renting a luxury condominium, which was alleged to have been a gift from a businessperson.

However, Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar (above) declined to reveal how much is the rent, apart from stating it was not an exorbitant amount.

Quizzed on how much he is paying a month, he replied: “That is too detailed... it is not expensive. Many ordinary people live there. There are many homestays as well and vacant units.”

On the size of the unit, he said: “Just an ordinary house.”

The Semerah assemblyperson, who is from PKR, also denied a news report claiming the rent was more than RM3,000 per month.

“No lah... Furthermore, state excos have housing allowance. We also look for homes close to the office,” he added.

In a statement earlier, Khuzzan said he has been renting the unit from Country Garden Danga Bay Sdn Bhd for almost a year.

“I started renting the condominium last June until now. It was not given to me.

“The allegation is not related to my previous portfolio as the chairperson of the youth, sports and culture committee or my current portfolio,” he added.

Khuzzan said he was responding to PSM Youth chief Khalid Mohd Ismath.

On Monday, Khalid tweeted that a group would expose Khuzzan if he does not return the unit and vacate the premises within seven days.

Khuzzan's statement comes in the wake of Johor PKR chief Hassan Abdul Karim reminding the state's party members to uphold their integrity and be cautious of gratification.

“We need to be transparent and have integrity in our conduct. This reminder also goes out to me,” he told Malay Mail.

Hassan said while PKR welcomed whistleblowers, the latter, however, must back their allegations with evidence.

“This is important as the allegation of gratification is serious and should not be part of a slander campaign,” he added.

Whereas, the PSM Youth chief said he issued the warning because he does not want to see the Pakatan Harapan government fall like BN because of corruption issues.

“For me, it is a question of the need to uphold integrity. We can't have rich individuals wielding their influence over elected representatives,” he added.
