Former MACC chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull said he had planned from the very beginning to serve for one year as the commission’s chief, and that he was not pressured to leave.
He also said he only found out that lawyer Latheefa Koya would replace him as MACC chief on June 4.
“I had to come forward about the shortening of my service, and please tell the public that I did not resign, I merely shortened my service.
“(I came forward because) I heard all the accusations against me saying I was told to resign because I supposedly covered up a few cases," Shukri said.
He was speaking at a press conference in Putrajaya today, which was streamed live online.
“I already told (Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad) that I will only agree to serve for one year," he added.
Shukri explained that he had told the premier about his intention to remain in the post for a year when the two met on May 14, 2018.
He stated that he had only wanted to remain for a year to resolve two matters in the MACC, namely to complete the investigations pending from when he first left the MACC in 2016, and to fix the commission’s internal issues.
Now that he had finished both tasks, he could leave as originally intended, he said.
“About my successor Latheefa, I didn’t know (she was replacing me). I only found out on (June) 4,” Shukri stated.

He also denied covering up any cases such as those involving former defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein and former Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
“As far as I remember during my tenure as the chief commissioner, there were no case files for Hishammuddin or Shahrizat.
“Shahrizat and her NFC (National Feedlot Corporation) case is being investigated by the police, not the MACC, and I am not sure about Hishammuddin but as far as I remember, don’t have,” he said.
Shukri also denied playing any part in rescinding former attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali’s travel ban, as the matter is under the jurisdiction of the Immigration Department.
