Thirty university students will be exposed to the importance of integrity, ethics and good governance in business and government during a two-day workshop organised by the local chapter of an international corruption watchdog.

The Kuala Lumpur Society for Transparency and Integrity (Transparency International Malaysian Chapter) will be conducting the workshop for students from public and private universities on Nov 10 and 11.

"University students represent a valuable pool of future leaders in business, politics and social arenas," said TI Malaysia executive director Teresa Benedict today.

Therefore, it is important to equip them with sound understanding of the importance of non-corruption and good governance to further the cause of transparency and integrity, and ultimately enhancing democracy in Malaysia, added Benedict.

She explained that the workshop will give students the necessary exposure to participate freely in helping shape the country's future.

They will also be provided with the necessary knowledge and skills to organise and tackle issues of concern, she said.

Distinguished speakers

Benedict said participating students will explore personal understandings of corruption and transparency and will be given the opportunity to interact with distinguished guest speakers from the Anti-Corruption Agency and the Malaysian Institute of Corporate Governance.

Participation is open to 30 first- and second-year undergraduates as well as to members of the Student Representative Council and Student Consultative Council.

Students are required to submit their registration form together with a short write-up on why they are interested in participating.

"Gender and ethnicity considerations will be given to the selection process to reflect the composition of our society," said Teresa.

Students will be required to commit themselves to the entire period of the workshop. The closing date for the submission of registration forms and essays is on Oct 15.

Benedict also said that students who attend the workshop will be expected to organise a twice-yearly training programme for other students on campus.

"We will provide them assistance by way of speakers to spread awareness of the importance of transparency, integrity and good governance in public and private institutions," she said.
